iHearMusic presents The World

The Basement, Circular Quay Tues Nov 15

Phat beats! Sassy songs! Township Jive!

With an original flavour that leans toward the funk and soul side of music Michael Wheatley has captivated Sydneys live funk and dance scene as a vocalist, keyboardist, writer, producer and DJ since the early 90s. Michael will be playing tunes from his Dirty Carpet Disco Band album and showcasing his just completed fourth solo album Universal Joint, featuring original funk and dance related sounds with an emphasis on blending rootsy earthy textures with synthetic keyboard licks and beats of the PHAT variety.

Sally Street is one of Sydney's finest independent female singer/songwriters. Sally's music continues to transcend all genre barriers with wicked defiance and her trademark infectious sense of FUN!  Sydney's sparkling sassy songstress literally purrs down the mic with her brand new set of soon-to-be released original poppy jazzy hits fronted by an all-star band featuring James Muller (guitar), Bill Risby (piano), Calvin Welch (drums/percussion), and Alex Hewetson (bass).

Chris Gudu brings the irresistible township jive rhythms of his homeland Zimbabwe to the world as he showcases his brand new album Imnandi. The Chris Gudu Band captures the musical and spiritual grooves of Bulawayo and beyond - where he grew up not only playing musical instruments and singing with his family, but actually making the instruments. About to embark on a two month tour of Africa, Chris band features Agatha Duallah & Joyce Mungombe (backing vocals), Michael Coggins (lead guitar), Ryan Baker (rhythm guitar), Sam Parkinson (Keyboards), Andrew Morris (Bass) and Andy Cutugno (Drums).

DJ Brent Clough will be joining us again to spin some tunes between our 3 live acts. Brent is one of the co-creators and current presenter of ABC Radio Nationals audio adventure The Night Air. He has previously produced and presented the innovative music program Other Worlds and the world music show The Daily Planet. Brent presented two music shows on 2SER-FM: the long-running reggae show Splashdown and the world groove show Bambu Hut and he was a founder of Sydneys first dancehall reggae sound system Nasty Tek.

One Hot Night in Sydney

Vanguard - Wed November 16, 2011

The rhythms of Zimbabwe return to The Vanguard as Chris Gudu and his seven piece band embark on an Australia-wide tour to launch the release of his new album 'Imnandi' in Australia.

As usual Chris Gudu's music is designed to entertain, to make you feel good and to make you move. The new album is filled with such grooves and rhythms.

'The Chris Gudu performance is worth experiencing, not just once but over and over again' - The ABC.

This Sydney show is not to be missed for anything.

Be captured by the rhythms of Umbaqanga, traditional Southern African music with a catchy contemporary feel - an unforgettable night of dance.

Chris Gudu’s up tempo and exuberant music is what is often referred to as 'Township Jive Music' and is better known in Southern Africa as Umbaqanga music which sometimes presents a touch of Afro jazz. Umbaqanga music originates from the streets and sheebeens of Soweto, spreading all through and across Southern Africa. When describing his style of music, Chris says "When you listen to the music, it doesn’t tell you to sit down and listen- it tells you to get up and dance!".

Chris Gudu's line-up features a combination of African and Australian musicians. The Chris Gudu performance is worth experiencing, not just once but over and over again. As Chris says “I live to perform live. There’s a real closeness, an interaction, a sharing. The groove is magic!”
